BACKGROUND: Zinc-oxide eugenol (ZOE) cements are among the most used temporary materials in dentistry. Although ZOE has advantages over other temporary fillers, its mechanical strength is weaker, so researchers are working to improve it. E-glass fibers have emerged as promising reinforcing fibers in recent years due to their strong mechanical behavior, adequate bonding, and acceptable aesthetics. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compare the compressive strength, surface microhardness, and solubility of the ZOE and those reinforced with 10 wt.% E-glass fibers. METHODS: A total of 60 ZEO specimens were prepared; 30 specimens were reinforced with 10 wt.% E-glass fibers, considered modified ZOE. The characterization of the E-glass fibers was performed by XRF, SEM, and PSD. The compressive strength, surface microhardness, and solubility were evaluated. Independent sample t-tests were used to statistically assess the data and compare mean values (P ≤ 0.05). RESULTS: The results revealed that the modified ZOE showed a significantly higher mean value of compressive strength and surface microhardness while having a significantly lower mean value of solubility compared to unmodified ZOE (P ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSION: The modified ZOE with 10 wt.% E-glass fibers had the opportunity to be used as permanent filling materials.

Odontology, as a scientific discipline, continuously collaborates with biomaterials engineering to enhance treatment characteristics and patients' satisfaction. Endodontics, a specialized field of dentistry, focuses on the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental disorders affecting the dental pulp, root, and surrounding tissues. A critical aspect of endodontic treatment involves the careful selection of an appropriate endodontic sealer for clinical use, as it significantly influences treatment outcomes. Traditional sealers, such as zinc oxide-eugenol, fatty acid, salicylate, epoxy resin, silicone, and methacrylate resin systems, have been extensively used for decades. However, advancements in endodontics have given rise to bioceramic-based sealers, offering improved properties and addressing new challenges in endodontic therapy. In this review, a classification of these materials and their ideal properties are presented to provide evidence-based guidance to clinicians. Physicochemical properties, including sealing ability, stability over time and space, as well as biological properties such as biocompatibility and antibacterial characteristics, along with cost-effectiveness, are essential factors influencing clinicians' decisions based on individual patient evaluations.

Purpose: to update the 2016 systematic review evidence for vital pulp therapy (VPT) for primary teeth affected by caries or trauma. Methods: The population, intervention, comparison, outcomes, and study (PICOS) design inclusion/exclusion was used for multiple databases. Risk of bias, meta-analyses using RevMan, and certainty of evidence was created. Results: A total of 299 studies were included; no trauma was found. Indirect pulp treatment (IPT) resulted in 97 percent success. Two calcium silicate cement (CSC) pulpotomies' success using mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Biodentine® were 94 percent and 90 percent, respectively, greater than for direct pulp capping (DPC; 86 percent) and other pulpotomies (moderate certainty). The success of IPT versus pulpotomy at 24 months showed no significant difference (P=0.31). Different liners or capping agents did not affect the success of IPT (P=0.79) or DPC at 24 months (P=0.24). The two CSC pulpotomies were not significantly different based on 24-month success (P=0.34). The formocresol pulpotomy success at 24 months was significantly lower than for MTA (P=0.02). Ferric sulfate had a significant lower success at 24 months than MTA pulpotomy (69 percent versus 92 percent; P=0.03). Zinc oxide eugenol, as a singular pulpotomy, had low success (65 percent). Selective/stepwise caries removal did significantly better at avoiding pulp exposures than complete excavation (P<0.001). Complete, selective, and no caries removal (Hall technique [HT], steel crown placement with no caries removal) had no significant difference in pulp vitality success for deep caries at 24 months (P=0.29). For deep caries affecting vital incisors, pulpotomy had significantly greater success than pulpectomy (P=0.002). The following had no significant effect on MTA pulpotomy success: coronal pulp removal methods; irrigation solution; method to control hemorrhage; base over MTA; treatment in one or two visits; and anterior or posterior teeth. Conclusions: Vital pulp therapy success of indirect pulp treatment or two calcium silicate cement pulpotomies demonstrated improved success over direct pulp capping and other pulpotomies based on 24-month evidence with moderate certainty. The Hall technique did not significantly reduce pulp vitality success versus caries removal.

AIM: To compare the clinical and radiographically mixture of zinc oxide with Aloe vera, Curcumin and neem as an obturating material for pulpectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study comprised of age group 4-8 years children requiring endodontic treatment for at least a single primary molar tooth. Sixty primary molar teeth from 43 children were divided equally and randomly into four study groups. The materials used for obturation were zinc oxide powder (ZnO) and Eugenol (ZOE) (group I), ZnO and Aloe vera Gel (group II), ZnO and Curcumin Powder (group III), ZnO and neem extract (group IV). They were evaluated clinically and radiographically at immediate postoperative and then at 1-, 3-, 6-, and 9-month intervals. RESULTS: At the end of 9 months, the Chi-square test revealed 100% success rate for recovery of pain in group I and III, 66.66% in group II and 93.3% in group IV. The success rates for absence of abscess and for periradicular radiolucency in group I, III, and group IV were 100% and 66.6% for group II. The success rate for periapical radiolucency in group I and group III was 100%, in group II 66.6% and in group IV 93.35%. The success rate for all the groups shows 100% success in terms of pathological root resorption. CONCLUSION: Zinc oxide eugenol has proven to be the best obturating material. ZnO with Aloe vera showed a success rate which is significantly lower than the other medicaments. ZnO with Curcumin and ZnO with neem had shown promising clinical and radiographical results. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: ZnO with Curcumin and ZnO with neem can be used as a root canal filling material in primary teeth with further follow-up studies.

OBJECTIVES: The complex root canal anatomy of primary teeth keeps it very tricky to attain appropriate cleansing by biomechanical instrumentation, so obtaining an obturating material with excellent antimicrobial properties is a challenge in current clinical pulpectomy practice. So, this study aimed to assess the clinical and radiographic performance of zinc oxide-ozonated olive oil as a primary root canal filling material. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety non-vital primary molars in children ranging from 4 to 8 years were allocated into three groups in which root canals were filled with zinc oxide-ozonated olive oil, zinc oxide-olive oil, and zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE) according to each group after pulpectomy procedure. Clinical and radiographic evaluations were done at 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up periods. Statistical analysis was performed for the collected data. RESULTS: All study groups showed a significant improvement regarding clinical signs and symptoms during follow-up periods. Ozonated-olive oil group revealed a significant increase in furcation radiodensity and a decrease in periodontal ligament space at 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up intervals compared to other groups. CONCLUSION: Zinc oxide-ozonated olive oil and zinc oxide-olive oil paste had shown good clinical and radiographic success for primary teeth pulpectomy. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The intricate torturous primary root canal anatomy, in addition to the child's negative behavior, interferes with the complete debridement, so the long-lasting antibacterial effect of the primary root canal filling material aids in the pulpectomy success.

PURPOSE: The aim of this review was to compare the currently available root canal filling materials for primary teeth to zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE) to find a suitable alternative. The search question was: which root canal filling materials used in pulpectomy for primary teeth give better clinical and radiographic success rates than ZOE? METHODS: A systematic search was conducted using five databases, namely Cochrane central register of controlled trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE via PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus and EBSCOhost using a selection of "MeSH terms". The "Modified Jadad Scale" was used for the methodology assessment of the included studies. RESULTS: Out of 480 articles identified in the initial search, 8 articles met all the inclusion criteria. The results showed that, compared to ZOE, ZOE with calcium hydroxide and iodoform had better clinical and radiographic success rates, a resorption rate similar to that of the roots, faster resorption of extruded particles and a maximum decrease in the size of pre-operative inter-radicular radiolucencies. CONCLUSION: Numerous materials, proposed and used by clinicians in root canal filling in primary teeth, can be recommended as alternatives to ZOE. However, none of them could be the ideal material in primary teeth. Thus, more high-quality well-designed randomised clinical trials are required to develop more high-performing materials.

The present study evaluated the antibiofilm and antimicrobial effects of temporary restorative materials on root canals after an intra-oral challenge. Seventy roots were endodontically treated and divided into 5 groups: high-viscosity glass ionomer (HV-GIC), light-activated glass ionomer (RM-GIC), zinc-oxide cement without eugenol (ZO), zinc-oxide cement with eugenol (ZOE), and unsealed roots (negative control). For 28 days, 14 participants used intra-oral devices with five roots, and drops of sucrose were applied onto them. The amount of biofilm and the bacterial counts were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn, and by two-way ANOVA and Tukey (α = 0.05). HV-GIC and RM-GIC better inhibit biofilm, followed by ZO and ZOE. Unsealed roots had the largest biofilm accumulation (p = 0.002) and higher bacterial penetration than restored roots (p = 0.023). A low amount of Streptococcus was found in RM-GIC and ZOE-restored roots without difference from HV-GIC (p = 0.021). The low amount of Enterococcus (p = 0.003) was found in the ZOE-restored roots, without difference from GICs.

Purpose: To assess the setting of premixed mineral trioxide aggregate (NuSmile NeoPUTTY) when used as a pulpotomy agent in primary molars, restored in a single visit, and to compare the effect of overlying materials, including zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE), resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) and stainless steel crowns (SSC), on the microhardness of the NeoPUTTY.
Methods: Forty-eight extracted primary molars were prepared with the standard pulpotomy technique. Approximately three mm of NeoPUTTY were placed on the pulpal floor of each tooth. The teeth were divided into four groups according to restorative material: (1) control group-none; (2) RMGIC; (3) ZOE; and (4) ZOE and SSC. Groups 2, 3 and 4 specimens were placed in artificially simulated oral cavity conditions. After 24 hours, all teeth were sectioned mesiodistally and polished. Microhardness was then measured in Knoop scales (HK) at one mm, two mm and three mm away from the NeoPUTTY-overlying material interface following the application of a 25-gf load force for 30 seconds at each site. One-way analysis of variance was used to compare the NeoPUTTY microhardness values between groups at each depth as well as between the three different depths within each group (P <0.05).
Results: No statistically significant differences in mean HK values (57.9 to 62.3 range) were found between groups at each depth, or between depths within each group (Group 1,P =0.328; Group 2, P =0.74; Group 3, P =0.293; Group 4, P =0.788).
Conclusion: The setting reaction of NeoPUTTY, as a function of microhardness, was not affected by the presence or type of overlying material used in a single-visit pulpotomy. This in vitro study found no evidence against the immediate restoration of primary molar pulpotomies done with NeoPUTTY.

Aim: The present study was aimed to investigate the functional relationship between the mixing temperature and properties of a commercially available zinc oxide eugenol impression paste (ZnOE paste). Settings and Design: In-vitro study. Materials and Methods: A custom-made simulated mixing device was indigenously designed to maintain different mixing temperatures, simulating cold, ambient, and hot weather. A commercially available ZnOE paste was mixed according to the manufacturer's instructions in the simulated mixing device at the temperatures ranging from 10°C to 50°C. Initial setting time and consistency were measured according to A. D. A. Specification No. 16 (n = 8). A stainless-steel die having 25, 50, and 75 µm lines was used for surface detail reproduction. Detail reproduction of the stone casts of the impressions was evaluated with a stereomicroscope at 30 magnification (n = 8). The shear bond strength of ZnOE paste to self-cure acrylic tray resin was measured by using the UTM at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min (n = 8). Statistical Analysis Used: Data were analyzed by using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc tests at a confidence interval of 95% (alpha =0.05). Results: Initial setting time, consistency, and detail reproduction of the ZnOE paste were affected by the mixing temperature (P < 0.001). Mixing ZnOE paste at a lower temperature of 10°C and higher temperatures of 40°C and 50°C resulted in shorter initial setting time, thicker consistency, and poor detail reproduction. However, no significant difference was obtained in the shear bond strength among the different mixing temperatures evaluated (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Based on this in vitro study, it is advisable to perform the manipulation of ZnOE paste at a clinical/laboratory temperature of 30°C for optimum performance. The simulated mixing device used in this study can be an alternative for extreme climatic conditions.

BACKGROUND: Endodontic treatment of primary molars represents one of the challenges in pediatric dentistry. There is a lack of consensus in the literature about the endodontic techniques and filling paste for primary teeth with pulp necrosis. AIM: To compare the effectiveness of the LSTR technique (lesion sterilization and tissue repair) with CTZ paste (chloramphenicol, tetracycline, zinc oxide and eugenol) and pulpectomy with ZOE paste (zinc oxide and eugenol) in the treatment of primary molars with pulp necrosis. DESIGN: Eighty-eight primary molars with pulp necrosis from 70 children between the ages of 3 and 8 years were included. The teeth were randomized to the LSTR with CTZ paste group or pulpectomy with ZOE paste group. Clinical and radiographic evaluations were performed at 18, 24, 30 and 36 months. RESULTS: At 36 months, clinical success was 86.4% in LSTR with CTZ paste and 90.9% in pulpectomy with ZOE paste (p = .45). Radiographic success was 43.2% in both groups (p = 1.00). The overall success was 40.9% in LSTR with CTZ paste and 43.2% in pulpectomy with ZOE paste (p = 1.00). CONCLUSION: After 36 months of evaluation, the effectiveness of the LSTR technique with CTZ paste and pulpectomy with ZOE paste was similar for the treatment of primary molars with pulp necrosis.

BACKGROUND: To increase the success rate of the endodontic treatment in primary teeth various, obturating materials have been introduced to meet the specific requirements for deciduous dentition and to create a three-dimensional (3D) seal to prevent recurrence of bacterial infection. This study was conducted to compare and evaluate the three-dimensional seal and volumetric filling of primary canals obturated with different medicaments using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: In-vitro cross sectional study was designed with sample size of 108 specimens. Thirty-six extracted primary molars were selected for the study and randomly divided into 3 groups A (Metapex; Meta Biomed, Osong-eup, Korea), B (Endoflas; Sanlor Laboratories, Cali, Colombia) and C (Zinc oxide eugenol; DPI India Ltd., Mumbai, India). After access opening, canals were prepared up to 30 no k- file followed by obturation with Metapex, Endoflas and Zinc oxide eugenol in respective groups. CBCT was done before and after the obturation for volumetric analysis. The data obtained were analyzed to attain POV (percentage of obturated volume) and PVV (percentage volume of voids). RESULTS: The percentage of obturated volume (POV) was highest for Endoflas group (88.87) followed by Metapex (83.58) and ZnO (72.78) and the difference was statistically significant. Whereas the percentage volume of voids (PVV) was more in Zinc oxide eugenol group (27.22) followed by Metapex (16.42) and least voids were seen in Endoflas group (11.14). CONCLUSIONS: Voids were found in all three obturating materials. Endoflas showed superior three-dimensional (3D) sealing capability whereas ZnO eugenol having least sealing capacity.

The aim of the present study was to compare the physico-chemical properties of EssenSeal with AH PLUS bioceramic and Pulp Canal Sealer EWT. Flow, solubility, film thickness, radiopacity and setting time were evaluated according to ISO 6876 (2012) specifications. External and cross-section surface characteristics were analysed under a scanning electron microscope. Statistical analysis was performed using Shapiro-Wilk's test, one-way ANOVA and the Tukey HSD test. All the sealers conformed to the ISO 6876 (2012) standards, except for the setting time for AH plus bioceramic, which exceeded more than 10% of the time indicated by the manufacturer. Statistically significant differences were found between the three study sealers regarding the physico-chemical properties tested (p < 0.05). EssenSeal demonstrated characteristics respecting the ISO 6876 (2012) standards and can be considered a predictable alternative in root canal sealing.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to analyze the success of primary molar pulpectomy with a minimum of 1 year and up to 4 years follow-up with focus on the treatment setting (general anesthesia, sedation, local anesthesia alone). METHOD AND MATERIALS: Data were retrieved from 92 patients' records between 2012 and 2020. The pulpectomy treatment using calcium-hydroxide/iodoform paste was performed under general anesthesia (n = 45), nitrous oxide sedation (n = 21), or local anesthesia alone (n = 39). Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed. RESULTS: The overall success of pulpectomy was 59.5% 4 years post-treatment. The 4-years clinical success rate was clinically relevantly higher under general anesthesia (78.6% vs 57.1% under nitrous oxide sedation, 43.8% with local anesthesia only) and in the mandibular arch (70.8% vs 38.5% in the maxillary arch). This could be related to the strict case selection under sedation and especially general anesthesia. Despite statistically significant differences in the bivariate analysis for most outcomes and follow-up periods, this was not the case in multivariate regression. CONCLUSION: Pulpectomy performed in primary molars offers a successful long-term treatment option especially with a strict case selection as under general anesthesia.

Aim: To evaluate the resistance of the union between a glass fiber post and radicular dentine after cleaning the root with 17% EDTA and filling with different endodontic cements. Methods: Forty uniradicular bovine incisors were removed to obtain root lengths of 18 mm. Endodontic treatment was performed on all roots using different filling cements (zinc oxide and eugenol-based, OZE; cement based on epoxy resin, AH) and cleaning solutions (saline, SA or EDTA), which made it possible to obtain four groups: OZESA, OZEEDTA, AHSA and AHEDTA. Subsequently, 12 mm of filling material was removed from the roots, and they were prepared to receive fiber posts luted with resin cement. To execute the mechanical cycles (2x106 cycles, 90 N, 4 Hz), coronal reconstruction was performed with a silicon matrix. The roots were then sliced (2-mm thick) to perform the push-out test. The results were analyzed using analysis of variance (one factor and two factors) and Tukey's test (α=0,05). Results: Bond strength (Mpa) was significantly higher for OZEEDTA (9,18) and AHEDTA (8,70) than for OZESA (6,06) AHSA (8,7). OZEEDTA also presented the highest values in the cervical region (15,18) but was significantly lower in the apical region (2,99). However, AHEDTA had a homogeneous bond strength in all thirds. Conclusion: Regardless of the endodontic cement used, EDTA was used as an irrigating solution, culminating in a higher bond strength between the glass fiber post and dentin

BACKGROUND: Adhesive tooth-colored restorations are strongly dependent on the substrate surface cleanliness to allow intimate contact between resin cement and dentin surface, so several methods were adopted for the total cleaning of temporary cement residues. This study aimed to assess the effect of mechanical and chemo-mechanical cleaning methods of temporary cement on the immediate shear bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement to dentin surface. METHODS: Forty freshly extracted lower first premolars were cut to expose a flat dentin surface. Discs of temporary crown composite resin material were constructed and cemented to the flat dentin surface using resin-based and non-eugenol temporary cement then stored at room temperature in distilled water. Dividing of samples into two groups according to the method of temporary cement cleaning. Group I (n = 20) mechanical cleaning using the rotary instrument, and group II (n = 20) chemo-mechanical cleaning using chlorhexidine-containing scrub. CAD/CAM reinforced Composite discs were bonded to the dentin surface using self-adhesive composite resin cement, then measurement of shear bond strength was done using a universal testing machine. Further analysis of failure mode after debonding was performed by Scanning electron microscope. RESULTS: No statistically significant difference was found between the mean shear bond strength of the two cleaning methods (P-value = 0.636). Regardless of the cleaning method, the group cemented with resin-based temporary cement showed statistically significantly higher mean shear bond strength than non-eugenol temporary cement (P-value = 0.048). CONCLUSION: Both cleaning methods (mechanical and chemo-mechanical) applied in this study were effective in cleaning temporary cement remnants from the dentin substrate surface with statistically significant differences between results of shear bond strength with significantly higher values recorded with resin-based temporary cement.

The fundamental objective of pulp treatment is to preserve the integrity and health of oral tissues. Pulp necrosis or irreversible pulpitis is the key indication for performing pulpectomy in primary teeth. It can be performed as a single-visit or multi-visit procedure using suitable obturating material. Various obturating materials can be used like zinc-oxide eugenol or metapex. A controversy reflects in literature and among experts in regard to single-visit or multi-visit endodontics. Hence, the purpose of this randomized clinical trial is to assess the incidence of postoperative pain with zinc oxide eugenol and metapex as an obturating material in single-visit and multiple-visit pulpectomy. The study was conducted at M S Ramaiah Dental College and Hospital, Bangalore in one year duration from 2020 to 2021. Two groups of children, forty in each group, aged between four to eight years, were included in the study. Groups were divided to perform single-visit and multi-visit endodontics with zinc-oxide eugenol and metapex as obturating material. The sample size of 40 were considered and allocated to respective group by concealment allocation. The conventional pulpectomy procedure was carried out. The post operative pain was assessed by using the pain scale through the telephonic conversation with the patient within 24 hours of treatment. Proportions were compared using Chi-square test of significance and the "p" value of less than 0.05 indicates statistical significance. The results showed, no statistically significant difference in teeth obturated with zinc oxide eugenol and metapex in both single-visit and multi-visit pulpectomy. The comparison of zinc oxide eugenol and metapex in single-visit group and multi-visit group had a 'p' value of 0.9233 and 0.4233 respectively. There were no differences between single and multi-visit treatment protocols with respect to the incidence of post operative pain. Single visit pulpectomy can be performed with added advantages with either zinc oxide eugenol or metapex.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of zinc oxide-eugenol, calcium hydroxide, and mineral trioxide aggregate as base materials on the clinical and radiographic success of ferric sulfate pulpotomies in primary molars. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Following hemostasis with 15.5% ferric sulfate, 105 teeth were randomly allocated to three groups: Group 1, zinc oxide-eugenol; Group 2, calcium hydroxide; and Group 3, mineral trioxide aggregate. All teeth were restored with stainless-steel crowns. Clinical and radiographic examinations were conducted at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. RESULTS: After 24 months, clinical success rates for Groups 1 to 3 were 97.1% (34/35 teeth), 94.2% (33/35 teeth), and 97.1% (34/35 teeth), respectively (P > .05). Radiographic success rates were 65.7% (23/35 teeth), 65.7% (23/35 teeth), and 77.1% (27/35 teeth), respectively (P > .05). Internal resorption was the most observed radiographic finding (15/105 teeth). CONCLUSIONS: The choice of zinc oxide-eugenol, calcium hydroxide, and mineral trioxide aggregate, as base materials, did not affect the clinical and radiographic success of ferric sulfate pulpotomies in primary teeth.

BACKGROUND: Freshly mixed root canal sealers when proximate the periapical tissues, trigger varying degrees of cytotoxicity/inflammatory reactions. Simvastatin, a class of the drug statin, is a widely used cholesterol-lowering agent with additional anti-inflammatory activities. This study assessed the effects of simvastatin on cytotoxicity and the release of IL-6 (Interleukin-6) production when incorporated in zinc oxide eugenol and methacrylate resin-based sealers. METHODS: Experimental groups consisted of conventional zinc oxide eugenol and methacrylate based-EndoREZ sealers (ZE & ER respectively) and 0.5 mg/mL simvastatin incorporated sealers (ZES & ERS). L929 mouse fibroblast cells were exposed to freshly mixed experimental sealers and evaluated for cytotoxicity (MTT assay) and inflammation levels (inflammatory marker IL-6 for ELISA) at various time intervals (0h, 24h and 7th day). The values were compared to the cell control (CC; L929 cells alone) and solvent control (SC; L929 cells + DMSO) groups. All the experiments were conducted in triplicates and subjected to statistical analysis using IBM SPSS Statistics software. Non parametric tests were conducted using Kruskal-Wallis and Friedman tests for inter-group and intra-group comparisons respectively. Pairwise comparison was conducted by post hoc Dunn test followed by Bonferroni correction. P values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS: All the experimental groups (ZE, ER, ZES, ERS) exhibited varying degree of cytotoxicity and IL-6 expression compared to the control groups CC and SC. The cell viability for ZE and ER decreased on day 7 as compared to 24 h. ZES and ERS had higher viable cells (75.93% & 79.90%) compared to ZE and ER (54.39% & 57.84%) at all time periods. Increased expression of IL-6 was observed in ZE & ER (25.49 pg/mL & 23.14 pg/mL) when compared to simvastatin incorporated ZE & ER (ZES-12.70 pg/mL & ERS-14.68 pg/mL) at all time periods. Highest level of cytotoxicity and inflammation was observed in ZE compared to all the other groups on day 7. CONCLUSIONS: Addition of 0.5 mg/mL of simvastatin to the sealers (ZES and ERS) decreased the cytotoxicity in the freshly mixed state and reduces their inflammatory effect.

Background: To overcome some of the disadvantages of the current primary root canal obturating materials, there is a continued interest in search for chemical compounds with broader and more effective antibacterial action and less cytotoxicity. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate and compare in vivo the clinical and radiographic success of mixtures of zinc oxide-Ocimum sanctum extract, zinc oxide-ozonated oil, and zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE) as obturating materials in pulpectomy of primary molars. Settings and Design: This was an in vivo randomized controlled clinical trial. Materials and Methods: Ninety primary molars selected were randomly divided into three groups. Group A was obturated with zinc oxide-O. sanctum extract, Group B with zinc oxide-ozonated oil, and Group C with ZOE. All the groups were evaluated for success or failure based on clinical and radiographic criteria at the end of 1, 6, and 12 months. Statistical Analysis Used: The intra- and inter-examiner reliability of the first and the second co-investigators was calculated by Cohen's kappa statistic. The data were analyzed using Chi-square test, P ≤ 0.05 (indicates statistical significance). Results: By the end of 12 months, the overall clinical success rate was 88%, 95.7%, and 90.9% in Groups A, B, and C, respectively; whereas the radiographic success rate was found to be 80%, 91.3%, and 86.4% in Groups A, B, and C, respectively. Conclusion: On the basis of the overall success rates of all the three obturating materials, the following order of performance can be concluded: zinc oxide-ozonated oil > ZOE > zinc oxide-O. sanctum extract.

AIM: To evaluate voids and sealing ability using a disposable syringe, endodontic pressure syringe, and Skinni syringe with NaviTip in primary molars with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 15 extracted primary mandibular molars with at least one root ≥8 mm length and an equal number of mesiobuccal canals were divided into three groups, i.e., obturation using a disposable syringe, an endodontic pressure syringe, and a Skinni syringe with NaviTip, respectively. The evaluation of the apical seal was determined as the measurement between the apical end of the filling material and the radiographic apex. The quality of the filling was determined by the size, number, type, and location of voids present. Statistical analysis was done using the Chi-square test and post-hoc test. RESULTS: The endodontic pressure syringe score was the highest and statistically significant in obtaining apical seal (p = 0.013). Disposable syringe shows highest size of voids (p = 0.01) in which type I-voids (p = 0.04) and type S-voids (p = 0.07) were statistically significant. The location of voids was maximum at the middle third of the root (p = 0.016). CONCLUSION: The endodontic pressure syringe provided the best root canal obturation of primary molars, whereas the disposable syringe was least effective with the maximum number and size of voids. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Comparing the voids and sealing abilities of different obturating techniques with CBCT would help the pediatric practitioners for better outcome of obturation in primary teeth.
